Among the early entries coming in for the 2011 Medway Business Awards is a café which aims to be a home away from home.

You don’t need to go to the other side of the world to celebrate Australia Day and enjoy the taste of Oz.

The 'Land of Plenty' may be 12,000 miles away, but you would hardly know that from the fun and festivities laid on by a distinctive eating place in the Dockside Outlet Centre, Chatham Maritime.

Boomers is a coffee house that aims to be a home away from home for Australians and a popular venue for all.

Founder Tracey Brooks says: "it is not about just making money, it is giving everybody, especially those with families, a day out on us. We believe this helps build our community within Medway as nearly all of our customers know one another".

She believes that business should be about having fun, giving something back and making a bit of money along the way.

The café has increased its sales over the past year, has introduced loyalty cards and developed a social media.

"it is not about just making money, it is giving everybody, especially those with families, a day out on us".

It has also stepped up staff training and generally invested in the business.

Miss Brooks is eager to expand to a second and third site and create the brand nationally but she knows she has to be patient.

"we take the attitude that Rome was not built in one day and we continue to stay positive and take every opportunity to develop and revisit our company values," she says.

"Our customer base is 75% repeat business. We enjoy this as our core value is being a come away from home. This is a reality in our business".
